While working as a psychologist and a Procrastination Coach, I have heard many stories and given much counsel. As part of this give-and-take process, I have found myself returning to the same ideas to guide my thoughts and actions. These principles are also the basic underpinnings of the content of my blogposts. I hope you will find them helpful in your life too. As you will surely notice, many of these ideas contain the dreaded word “should.” I use “should” gently here, as we are all works in progress, struggling to change certain things about ourselves. Please take these suggestions as gently as you can.
Model for Change
- We are responsible for our own actions
- We should trust ourselves
- We should remove as much as possible any negative emotional meaning regarding our work
- We should use the help of other people productively and with gratitude
- We should not dwell on the past
- We should not fear the future
- We should not overblow the work in front of us
- We should not overblow the fact that we are the creator of this work
- We should respect time
- We should respect other people
- We should respect our gifts without downgrading them
- We should avoid abusing our bodies and minds in the name of productivity
- We should avoid competitive and comparative feelings
- We should understand that change comes gradually
- We should be tolerant of feelings of insecurity in ourselves
- We should communicate clearly whenever possible
- We should participate whenever possible
- We should take advantage of this moment
- We should take the opportunity to feel joy
